Prayers in Nave

Under Edward VI, processions were forbidden and ceremonies like censing and sprinkling with holy water were banned. The minister (as the clergy were now more usually called) would read prayers in the nave. Elizabeth preferred her clergy to wear vestments, and the minister is here wearing a cassock and surplice. Many ministers preferred to wear no vestments at all, but Elizabeth insisted.
