Sermon
The preaching of the word was central to the new service. In the time of Edward VI clergy often read a homily written by Cranmer. In the Elizabethan period, as the Universities turned out a sufficient supply of educated clergymen, it became more common for ministers to write their own sermons. The minister is shown here wearing a surplice, but many ministers would take their surplice off for the sermon and wear a Geneva gown instead.
